Byzantine empire
When Western Rome fell to the "Barbarians" the Eastern half flourished for another 1,000 years! They called themselves Romans back then, but today this empire is known as the Byzantine Empire. This is because although there are many similarities, there are many differences too. Byzantine comes from the word Byzantium, which became the capital of this empire (although it's named changed to Constantinople).
