Pangaea (Pan Gee Uh)
Before the Earth had 7 continents, they were all connected into one large "super continent". This is before the time of humans, but scientist have studied the geography of the Earth and think that the Earth's continents broke apart over millions of years.
Look at the Cretaceous Era, see if you can name the 7 continents since they are almost in their current spots. (don't confuse the triangle shaped island as a continent, that is actually the modern day country of India!) |
Investigating the past
Unlike today's world, not everything in history was written down. It is only a few thousand years ago that anybody ever recorded something on paper!
People who study the past (archaeologists, historians, and geographers) use paintings, fossils, sculptures, clothing, weapons, coins, etc. to figure out what life used to be like. These objects that ancient people left behind are called artifacts. To the right there are 4 paintings from an ancient cave in Lascaux (lah-skoh), France. Can you figure out what any of these paintings mean? |
