The Nile River is the reason why people were able to build great civilizations in this part of the world. Despite being surrounded by deserts, the Nile fertilizes the land and allows crops to grow. The Nile flows North and empties into the Mediterranean Sea.
Egyptian pharaohs and their accomplishments
Khufu: the pyramid builder
Pharaoh Khufu's Great Pyramid at Giza is one of the "7 Wonders of the World". It was constructed during the Old Kingdom period.
Hatshepsut: Promoter of Egyptian trade
Senusret I: Patron of the arts
The White Chapel shows Senusret's love for religion and architecture. At one point historians think it was covered in a layer of gold. Unfortunately his monuments have all been destroyed over time. Archaelogists discovered the pieces of the white chapel and reconstructed it so this history wasn't lost.
In addition to architecture, Senusret promoted art and literature. One of the greatest works in Egyptian literature, "The Story of Sinuhe" was written during his reign. Artwork was usually carved on pillars and showed the pharaoh with gods and animals. |

daily life and culture
A pyramid is an accurate shape to describe the social classes of Egypt. The largest class is on the bottom (slaves) while the smallest class is on top (there is only 1 pharaoh). The class system was rigid, meaning you were born into the same class as your parents and it was nearly impossible to move up. Unlike in America, Egyptians never had a choice!

Kush
also known as Nubia
Intro to the kingdom of Kush/Nubia. Also discussed is the excavation still being done today. In the future historians and archaeologists may know as much about Kush as they do Egypt.

Get a glimpse of what Kush looks like today (Countries of Sudan and Ethiopia). In the ancient world there were many connections between Kush and Egypt, both good and bad.
